What does the annual review of our Lockout/Tagout (LO/TO) procedure entail?
The Lockout/tagout (LO/TO) safety procedure is used in industry and research settings to ensure dangerous machines are properly shut off and not able to be started again prior to maintenance or repair work.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the procedure prevents the release of hazardous energies, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal and others.
If your organization utilizes the LO/TO safety procedure, it is important to know that part of the standard itself requires employers to “conduct a periodic inspection of the energy control procedure at least annually to ensure that the procedure and the requirements” of the standard are being followed.
LO/TO Annual Review
According to Caleb Thompson, a Senior Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) consultant with ERI Solutions LLC., an annual review of your Lockout/Tagout (LO/TO) procedure includes:
- Analyzing all annual profiles that are utilized to ensure they are correct.
- Reviewing the program to confirm no regulatory requirements have changed.
- Ensuring everything is running smoothly.
- Confirming your employees know how to perform the LO/TO procedure properly.
